The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is seeking interested and qualified candidates for its Executive Director position. We have placed the bar very high to attract the right kind of candidates for the future of the Society and the profession at large.
As many of you already know, design pioneer Bill Moggridge, FIDSA succumbed to cancer this weekend at 69.
The Industrial Designers Society of America mailed its last issue of Design Perspectives in 2009 with a promise to return one day in another form. That day has come.
I wanted to thank everyone who attended the Future is... International Conference in Boston and all of you who helped to make it happen.
At the 2012 International Conference in Boston, IDSA handed out its IDSA Awards. In January, IDSA invited all members in good standing to champion candidates for the Awards. Once all of the nominations were received, the 2012 Awards Committee reviewed the nominations and sent their recommendations to the Board of Directors for final approval.

Last winter, IDSA published Innovation through a cross-platform digital publisher called issuu. The experiment was successful and Innovation issues are now being fulfilled in print but also digitally for your iPad, tablet or even smartphone.
IDEA winners, selected from this year’s IDSA International Conference in Boston, have been touring ever since the conference began—both in Boston and in Korea. Whether in America or abroad, the message is the same: Good design is the basis for improved products, better business and a richer life.

On Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, the datacenter that houses IDSA’s dedicated server failed, causing idsa.org to disappear for over nine hours.
A representative of our hosting company stated that the new datacenter had not been affected by fire, flood or power outage. The datacenter would have detected and compensated for these within a few hours, if not sooner. Instead, the issue was related to routing. They, of course, apologized profusely.

2012 has been a momentous year for IDSA as we continue to build our resources and strengthen our offerings to you, our members. We completed our move into new headquarters in Herndon, VA, in January. This move has given us more space and significantly lowered our costs and is in a more people- friendly location for our staff and visitors.
The IDSA holiday door decorating contest was on, and though the real creative talent lies with our membership, the staff didn’t do too badly.
Each staff member decorated the door to his or her office. And the best, most festive, fun and creative door was determined by an impartial committee made up of people from neighboring offices.
China’s Creative Design Week 2012 brought design experts together from across the globe. It was evident that, in China, design continues to play an increasingly weighty role in manufacturing. China wants to increase the impact of design on the success of goods manufactured in China and to further sustainable manufacturing processes.
The events of the week provided excellent venues for IDSA to promote the value of design, intellectual property and international property rights to benefit members of IDSA and the design profession at large.
HERNDON, Va., Jan. 3, 2013 – The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), the world’s oldest and largest membership organization for industrial design, chose association executive Daniel Martinage, CAE, as its new executive director after an extensive search. He will start on Jan. 4.

The results are impressive and reflect the types of current board experiences members continue to support and new experiences you desire to have on the board.
Educator, inventor, designer and entrepreneur Shaun Jackson, IDSA, died Tuesday from injuries sustained in a Florida plane crash last weekend.
Building upon a long history of cooperation and respect, IDSA and Core77 announced a new strategic alliance to jointly promote industrial design as a major contributor within the design community and society as a whole.
Congratulations to Sang Lee, IDSA’s program coordinator, who was sworn in on April 2 as a US citizen in a ceremony at an Alexandria VA high school. Sang and his family came from South Korea to live in the United States when he was 10. He decided recently to become a citizen of the US. “I’ve always wanted to be a citizen of the US, because I knew it would create more opportunities for me,” he said.
Native New Yorker Jerry Layne joins IDSA in the new position of director of administrative operations. His focus in this position will be on human resources, organizational development and strengthening IDSA’s internal policies and procedures. He’s a great fit for this role with his recent HR and administrative management experience at the Society of Chemical Manufacturers & Affiliates (SOCMA), a trade association that assists small and mid-sized specialty chemical manufacturers. Before SOCMA, he worked for AMC Theaters as a general manager and manager.
